Glossary Term
Traceability
Definition
Traceability refers to the ability to track the history, location, or application of an item or process throughout its lifecycle. In the MedTech industry, traceability involves the documentation and tracking of medical devices, components, and materials from their origin through the entire supply chain and into the hands of the end user. This includes the ability to trace a product's movement from manufacturing, through distribution, to usage in clinical settings, and back again, particularly in the case of recalls or adverse events. Traceability is essential for ensuring product safety, quality, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Relevance to the MedTech Industry
Traceability plays a central role in maintaining the safety and effectiveness of medical devices. Regulatory bodies such as the FDA and EMA require traceability systems to ensure that manufacturers can quickly identify and track devices in case of recalls, adverse events, or quality issues. Traceability helps manage risks by providing transparency throughout the entire product lifecycle. It also supports compliance with international standards like ISO 13485 and FDA regulations (e.g., 21 CFR Part 820), which mandate that manufacturers maintain accurate records of the production, testing, and distribution of devices. Effective traceability systems allow companies to act swiftly in response to product issues, protect patients, and maintain consumer trust.
