Ureteral Stent

Definition

A ureteral stent is a medical device typically used to relieve obstruction or blockage in the ureter, which is the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder. The stent is a small, flexible tube inserted into the ureter to allow urine to flow from the kidney to the bladder, bypassing the blockage. It is commonly used in cases of kidney stones, tumors, or other conditions that cause ureteral narrowing or obstruction. Ureteral stents are usually temporary and are removed after the obstruction has been resolved or treated. They can be inserted through a cystoscope during a minimally invasive procedure or through a more invasive surgical approach, depending on the specific medical situation.

Relevance to the MedTech Industry

Ureteral stents are critical devices used in urology for treating obstructive uropathy and managing urinary tract issues. These devices must meet stringent regulatory standards, including those set by the FDA and ISO, to ensure patient safety and effectiveness. The design and materials used in ureteral stents must be biocompatible to prevent irritation, infection, or rejection, as these devices are in direct contact with the urinary system. Ureteral stents are often used in combination with other therapeutic treatments, such as surgery or lithotripsy, making them an essential part of the urological toolkit for healthcare providers.

Examples of Ureteral Stent Applications

  1. Kidney Stones:Ureteral stents are commonly used in the management of kidney stones. When a stone causes a blockage in the ureter, a stent can be placed to relieve the obstruction and allow the stone to pass more easily.

  2. Ureteral Obstruction from Tumors:Ureteral stents are used to manage obstructions caused by tumors, such as in the case of bladder or prostate cancer. They allow for urine drainage while further treatment is planned.

  3. Post-Surgical Complications:After surgeries such as kidney or ureteral procedures, a stent may be placed to support healing and prevent complications such as swelling or stricture.

Related Terms

  • Cystoscopy: A procedure used to insert a ureteral stent into the ureter using a small camera (cystoscope) to view the urinary tract.

  • Nephrostomy Tube: A tube inserted directly into the kidney to drain urine when the ureter is blocked and a stent cannot be used.

  • Ureteroscopy: A procedure used to examine the ureter and remove or treat obstructions such as stones, often used in conjunction with stent placement.

  • Renal Failure: A condition where the kidneys are unable to properly filter waste from the blood, often caused by an obstruction or other conditions that may require a ureteral stent.

  • Lithotripsy: A non-invasive procedure to break up kidney stones, often performed alongside the placement of a ureteral stent to assist in stone passage.
