Stent Delivery System
Definition
A stent delivery system is a medical device used to deploy a stent (a small, expandable tube) into a blood vessel or other body passage to maintain its openness after procedures like angioplasty or to treat conditions such as coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, or urethral strictures. The system typically consists of a catheter, a stent mounted on a balloon or a self-expanding stent, and a deployment mechanism. The catheter is inserted into the body, often through the femoral artery, and navigated to the site of the blockage. The stent is then expanded at the target site, either by inflating a balloon (balloon-expandable stents) or through the natural expansion of the stent material (self-expanding stents), and secured in place to keep the passage open.
Relevance to the MedTech Industry
Stent delivery systems are essential tools for the treatment of vascular diseases and other conditions requiring the support of a narrowed or obstructed vessel. The design of stent delivery systems has advanced significantly with improvements in materials, catheter designs, and stent technology, enabling less invasive procedures and improving patient outcomes. These systems are often used in conjunction with diagnostic imaging technologies to guide precise placement and ensure optimal stent positioning. Regulatory approval for stent delivery systems is stringent due to the risks associated with vascular interventions, and these devices must meet rigorous standards for safety, effectiveness, and sterility. Additionally, stent delivery systems are critical for minimally invasive surgeries, contributing to shorter recovery times and reduced patient risk.

Angioplasty: A medical procedure used to widen narrowed or obstructed arteries, often performed in conjunction with stent placement.
Balloon-Expandable Stents: Stents that are deployed using a balloon catheter, which expands the stent once positioned in the artery.
Self-Expanding Stents: Stents that deploy automatically once released from the catheter, often used in peripheral artery procedures.
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): A condition characterized by the narrowing of the coronary arteries, often treated with stent placement.
