Drug Coated Balloon (DCB)

Definition

A Drug-Coated Balloon (DCB) is a minimally invasive medical device used in interventional cardiology and peripheral vascular procedures to treat narrowed or blocked blood vessels. The balloon surface is coated with an anti-proliferative drug, such as paclitaxel, which is delivered to the vessel wall during inflation to prevent restenosis (re-narrowing of the artery) while minimizing the need for permanent implants like stents.

Relevance to the MedTech Industry

DCBs combine the mechanical benefits of angioplasty with localized drug delivery to improve outcomes for patients with vascular disease. They are particularly useful in treating lesions where stents are less effective or contraindicated, offering a temporary yet effective solution to maintain vessel patency.
