Diaphragmatic Pacemaker

Definition

A Diaphragmatic Pacemaker, also known as a phrenic nerve stimulator, is a medical device that uses electrical impulses to stimulate the phrenic nerve, causing the diaphragm to contract and facilitate breathing. It is commonly used in patients with central ventilatory failure or conditions such as spinal cord injuries, ALS, or congenital central hypoventilation syndrome.

Relevance to the MedTech Industry

Diaphragmatic pacemakers provide an alternative to mechanical ventilation, offering patients improved mobility, speech capability, and overall quality of life. By enabling natural breathing, these devices reduce the complications associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation.
