Autograft

Definition

An Autograft is a tissue transplant taken from one part of a patient’s body and transplanted to another part of the same individual. This procedure is commonly used in orthopedic, reconstructive, and dental surgeries, leveraging the patient’s own tissue to minimize the risk of immune rejection and ensure compatibility.

Relevance to the MedTech Industry

Autografts are considered the "gold standard" in tissue transplantation due to their superior biocompatibility and reduced risk of complications. They are extensively used for bone grafting, skin grafting, ligament reconstruction, and other surgical procedures where tissue regeneration or repair is required.

  • Bone Graft Substitute Synthetic or biologic materials that can complement or replace autografts in some applications.

  • Biocompatibility Standards Ensure that autograft-related devices support safe tissue transplantation.
