Angioplasty

Definition

Angioplasty is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to restore blood flow in narrowed or blocked blood vessels, typically arteries. It involves the insertion of a catheter with a balloon at its tip, which is inflated at the site of the blockage to widen the vessel. In many cases, a stent is placed to keep the artery open.

Relevance to the MedTech Industry

Angioplasty revolutionized cardiovascular care by offering a less invasive alternative to surgical procedures like coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). It improves patient outcomes, reduces recovery times, and lowers healthcare costs by effectively treating conditions such as coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease.

Additional Information & Related Terms

  • Stent Often deployed during angioplasty to maintain vessel patency.

  • Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) A primary condition treated by angioplasty.

  • Drug-Coated Balloon (DCB) A balloon catheter designed to deliver medication to reduce restenosis.
