Allograft

Definition

An Allograft is a tissue or organ transplant obtained from a donor of the same species but with a different genetic makeup than the recipient. In the MedTech industry, allografts are commonly used in orthopedic, dental, and reconstructive procedures, providing structural support, promoting bone regeneration, or replacing damaged tissues.

Relevance to the MedTech Industry

Allografts offer a solution for patients requiring tissue replacement or augmentation but who cannot use autografts (tissue from their own body). They are extensively processed to ensure safety, biocompatibility, and functionality, addressing medical needs in bone repair, ligament reconstruction, and wound healing.

Additional Information & Related Terms

  • Autograft Tissue transplanted from one part of the patient’s body to another, an alternative to allografts.

  • Bone Graft Substitute Synthetic or biologic materials used in place of allografts or autografts.

  • Biocompatibility/Biocompatibility Standards Ensures that processed allografts integrate safely with the recipient’s body.

  • Tissue Engineering An emerging field that develops alternatives to traditional allografts.
